BioHernia is dedicated to advancing mesh-free hernia treatments. Our mission is to provide safe, effective hernia care options that improve quality of life for people around the world.
In 2015, after experiencing an inguinal hernia and struggling to find mesh-free treatment options, our founder Nahom discovered Dr. Andreas Koch in Germany, where he successfully underwent a mesh-free inguinal hernia repair. This inspired him to create BioHernia, to help make mesh-free hernia repairs more accessible. Today, BioHernia connects patients with specialised hernia clinics across Europe, allowing others to benefit from the same effective treatment.
With years of patient feedback in mind, we launched a new, user-focused website that emphasises transparency and informative content, further improving the patient experience.
As travel restrictions and other pandemic limitations are lifted, we resumed our services, welcoming patients who had postponed their hernia repairs over the previous two years.
In early 2020, we celebrated a major milestone, treating our 1,500th patient at Dr. Koch’s clinic. Shortly thereafter, the COVID-19 pandemic suspended travel and halted elective operations at our clinics. Despite these challenges, our team adapted by introducing video consultations, ensuring patients continued to receive guidance and support.
With increasing patient numbers, we added Dr. Martin Wiese to our network of surgeons, further expanding operations to include Cottbus, Munich, London, and Frankfurt am Main.
We launched a new multilingual website to serve a broader audience, for the first time offering information in French, Swedish, and Danish, next to Dutch and English.
To provide aftercare for Dutch patients and meet the growing demand, we began organising monthly consultations in Amsterdam with Dr. Koch at Fysiomed, one of the top sports medical centers in Europe.
While attending a hernia congress, Nahom meets Dr. Ulrike Muschaweck, a specialist known for developing unique mesh-free hernia repair techniques, used on top athletes across Europe. They form a partnership, expanding BioHernia’s reach to offer operations in Cottbus, Munich, and London and to elite athletes.
Following the TV program’s airing, interest in mesh-free hernia surgery surges. Seeing the demand, Nahom establishes BioHernia to support Dr. Koch’s clinic with administrative assistance, officially registering the business with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce.
Within months, Nahom is contacted by Radar, a Dutch national TV program known for documentaries on consumer issues. As they are making a documentary about hernia mesh complications, they choose to interview Dr. Koch, bringing further attention to mesh-free hernia surgery in the Netherlands.
Fully recovered and very happy about his choice, Nahom decides to share his experience online by creating a website called Liesbreukoperatie.nu (“hernia repair now”). His story resonates with others, and several people reach out, ultimately choosing to have the same operation with Dr. Koch.

Our vision is a future where hernia care is truly personalised, offering mesh-free repairs for those who can benefit from them and mesh solutions only when necessary. With the medical advancements available today, tailored treatment plans that prioritise each patient’s unique health profile are already within reach, making mesh-free options viable and accessible for healthier individuals. BioHernia is committed to leading this shift in the medical industry, demonstrating through successful outcomes and ongoing research that hernia surgery without mesh is both effective and achievable. We aim to challenge the industry’s current approach, proving that mesh isn’t the only path to successful hernia surgery.
Our approach is guided by seven principles of care, connection, and commitment.
We believe that tailored care is the key to meeting each patient’s unique needs.
We empower patients with knowledge because transparency and education are central to every decision.
Innovative, patient-first solutions are at the heart of everything we do.
Trust starts with openness, which is why we communicate with empathy and clarity.
Success means prioritising patient outcomes, not our own accolades.
By partnering with Europe’s top hernia clinics, we ensure world-class care for our patients.
We embrace change and growth, continuously improving through patient feedback and innovations.
